If you missplay, yes. Properly angled and in a good position a Yamato can only really be countered by another Yamato or a CV. Your armor is monstrous when angled, you have a 57 mm deck so direct HE damage is much less effective (with fire prevention you also worry less about fires) and if you manage to get caught by torpedos 55% torpedo belt ensures that you probably will live through it. And at the same time your lolpen accurate guns rip through most ships on the enemy team as long as you know what you can overmatch. Give full broadside however and you will get wrecked pretty hard.

Implying you can be very agressive in the "I have 32 mm armor all over and has the profile of a CV"-Republique Snarky comments aside the Republique is the ship out of those two if you want a bit more in your face approach. It can still be pretty durable if you angle and with your fast RoF and speedy turrets it can dish out a suprising amount of damage even in a brawling situation (not suggesting you go brawl in the first place however unless in very specific situations). Use the speed, stay midrange ~15 km is optimal since it allows you to hit targets with relative ease and still leaves a gap for yourself to get undetected if you need to. Focus cruisers first (as always) since your guns overmatch every cruiser apart from Moskva and Stalingrad. Also don't forget your HE when fighting angled BB's or DD's. Your reload is fast and your HE is pretty good so switching ammo in a pinch does not hurt you as much as other tier 10 BB's.

The bow section on both the Yamato and Kurfurst is mostly covered in 32 mm plating, something you have no problem dealing with in a 203 mm armed cruiser or IFHE specced Wooster. And as stated previously, you don't need to pen to cause fires.

Which ships are keepers by tiers?
ollonborre replied to ZeroSkillPureLuck's topic in General Discussion
Pretty much all tier 6 ships, most tier 7 and tier 10. But yeah just keep the ones that suit you is the best answer really. -
Huh I never tend to look at my hitratio so that is suprising. My only guess is that I fire more shells or take more speculative shots due to the slightly faster reload. I still say that it is accurate and it feels very comfortable in the gunnery department, even if it just turns out to be confirmation bias.

What line for learning torpedo boat gameplay?
ollonborre replied to Subtle_Shift_In_Emphasis's question in Newcomer Questions
For tier 6-7 Fubuki, Akatsuki and Shiratsuyu are the best mid tier torpedo focused DD's currently, with good stealth, hard hitting torps with decent reload, large amounts of torps and good enough gun power to atleast take pot shots at other DD's (not in prolonged fights however). As for tier 10, Harugomo is the better option than the Shimakaze since guns>torpedoes when it comes to consistency. And since the SHimakaze has the easiest to spot torpedoes at tier 10 and pretty much no other redeeming qualities if you miss your torpedoes it gets left in the dust. So for training torpedo skills I would say Fubuki. For tier 10 and you still want torpedes, honestly every other tier 10 DD apart from the Khabarovsk is a better option than the Shimakaze. -
If you want higher rewards play operations or randoms. If you want a more relaxed shooting gallery stick to CooP. The rewards will most likely not go higher due to the faster nature of CooP and for the fact that it is just easier. As for the bots, yeah currently they are a bit to retarded. Still the better bots are in Operations so there is that.

I'm sorry, the PEF has issues sure but inaccurate guns are not one of those issues. This is by far one of the more consistently accurate BB's I have played across all tiers. The only way I can see why people find it inaccurate is because of low amount of guns and the occasional BB dispersion derpiness that affects all BB's.

Ships that are better skipped using FXP
ollonborre replied to HMS_Kilinowski's topic in General Discussion
Seattle is not brilliant but not because of squishyness. It is her awkward gun arcs that get her into trouble, working around the arcs will net you a really potent damage dealer. Colorado is as you say not bad. Aim for enemy BB noses and rack up large amounts of damage. Having guns that overmatch everything puts the Colorado above most tier 7 BB's. 5 km hydro, 10 km fast reloading torps, great AP damage and solid HP pool. Play it as a torp boat first and cap contestor second and you will have a solid cap molestor/torp boat. -
Oh, it is this guy again.

I generally agree with what you said overall. However for me it is not so much about the whole "wah wah I need to grind" it is just the whole issue of the grind being boring and lacking in variety (focusing on the last credit grind). A grind does not have to be fun, sure, but you can make a grind mundane enough so that you atleast don't want to just quit playing out of boredom.

Rocking my Hindenburg captain currently with the standard cruiser build and CE+AFT so I already got that covered. For Operations though I run my GK build. Secondary build+IFHE is hilarious even if the accuracy is lacking. Come on WG, it is not like manual secondaries are OP, give it the accuracy buff atleast down to tier 6 or possibly 5.
-
I just got my PEF today so I really need more battles in the thing before I jump to any real conclusions, but inital impressions are good actually. In Operations it is really fun especially with a secondary build. In randoms I need to do more testing but I tried both a secondary build and stealth build and the results were fairly similar. So far the PEF lands in the middle performance wise compared to my other tier 6 BB's so that is nice atleast. What did strike me though were the fantastic gun angles. Bait people into shooting at your belt and you can basically charge them fully angled while returning fire, so that is fun. And I do have to say the guns are accurate and hit consistently (damage is a bit hit and miss but hey ho).

http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Battle_of_the_North_Cape These are the Duke of York missions, and while some are harder or takes time to do, my point was also that the credit grinding was tedious. Picking for example 3 different missions of torping, spotting or damage farming gives me options and is more fun to play. And since you can repeat the easier missions on each stage to get your pins it further decreases the frustration in my oppinon.
-
Alright fair enough. But then we have the Graf Spee and Duke of York campaigns. The Graf Spee one was the easiest of the three, but it was also the first proper limited campaign with a reward ship. The Duke of York campaign was harder and contained more missions. But the missions where varied and you were never forced to just play one type of ship. And the final mission in each stage of the campaign was getting XP with modifiers included. Now getting between 25-45 000 XP depending on what stage you are on is pretty tedious aswell. However when you include all modifiers and that the campaign took place during a couple of 100% daily win weekends, getting that XP by just getting the daily win on a couple of ships each day stacked with XP modifiers was far easier and took less time than 4 million credits.

Do you find in port GUI even less responsive than usual lately?
ollonborre replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Mounting and dismounting flags seem to lag up the port more than usual lately. But other than that it is just as unresponsive as ever.- 20 replies

Just finished the credit grind a few minutes ago and got the PEF. Even with premium ships, camos and flags it was still a dull grind, and I can't imagine the sheer pain for a free to play player or people who don't have that much experience into the game. Yeah I know, not for everyone sure and they want people to force you to buy the ship but still. They gave away 30 000+ Bismarcks 2 years ago with a mission grind that arguably was less tedious than this, so dropping the credit grind to 2 million or atleast 3 million would not have hurt their sales anyways.

Because getting away from the standard 12 gun broadside is nice. Only the Yamato and Republique feels "unique" in the sense that they have a different gun layout. Montana, GK and the Conqueror all have 12 guns so in order to differentiate them from one another you have to go for the ships themselves and not so much the gunpower (their guns are still different, but it is more of a case of choosing the optimal platform). Bringing up the 457 as a viable option would give it some additional flavour and we might step away from the flamethrower if the 457 can perform on equal terms but not in pure fire spam.
-
That sounds like pretty crap guns to me. In a DD with great concealment and if you play a DD correctly you will often face down other DD's, having crappy guns is a death sentence.

Operations and free XP conversion. We have seen that a few times.

khabarovsk khaba, power creeped hard with overpen mechanics?
ollonborre replied to daimyo_willem's topic in General Discussion
The Kebab feels mostly fine tbh. As others have said in the thread that armor is both a saving grace and a death sentence in its own right, but most of the times you will survive thanks to that HE shattering and AP bounce armor strip. Also the gunpower is still great and speed is amazing. And you do have that heal as an option. Not counting the Harugomo, the Kebab sits in its gunboat place quite nicely. -
They are similar to the IJN destroyers, however they can not target destroyers with their torpedoes so you lack a lot of useful pressure. Their torps are incredibly stealthy and hit fairly hard and they have decent gunpower to back it up. Up to tier 9 I would go for the IJN if you want torpedo power, but at tier 10 even after the nerf Yueyang is a better option than the Shimakaze thanks to stealthier torpedoes and even after the gun buff on the Shima the Yueyang still has better guns in a knifefight. Hybrid DD's are the ones that you want though if you want torpedo power but still need to defend yourself, and the US and German DD's are the best hybrids currently.
-
The traverse is the same, and the HE DPM on both the 128 and 150 on both ships is almost identical. However the AP DPM is much higher on the 128. So it is more of a trade in terms of HE trading and fire chance vs punishing broadside targets. Need to do some testing if the AP pen is of any real difference however.
-
I'm no DD main but I would say yes, maybe. It depends on what line you play. DD's in general have a lot of matchwinning potential so a bad played DD can be more hurtful to your team than a badly played cruiser or BB. However if you go for caps, spot and harass then you can quite comfortably carry games to victory. I would recommend the German line for cap contesting and the US line for jack of all trades playstyle (from tier 7 and up). If you want pure torpedo power then IJN up to the Yugumo or the pan Asian tree. Still as I said I'm no expert on the matter so any proper DD main feel free to fill in the blanks or correct me.

To be honest you don't need that much dedication or learning. Beneath the turrets and smoke stacks/chimneys/pipes(?) you will find the citadel location of pretty much every ship in the game. So really all you have to learn is to aim beneath the turrets or smoke stacks and as long as you hit you will often get citadel penetrations. Exceptions are offcourse lightly armored ships that are discussed here. In those cases aiming slightly beneath the waterline means the water will act as "armor" and slow the shells down enough so that they detonate inside the citadel. Failing that aiming at them while they angle will also give your shells enough armor to dig into and you can citadel them through overmatch (this is if you are in a BB, in a cruiser you should have no real issues arming on broadside ships).
