I have noticed similar things, where when at long distance shots to the front of the ship register while shots to the rear don't. Despite VISIBLY going through the ship model.

[Suggestion] - Ships Ranked High Tier First
Exocet6951 replied to Flyingmanticore's topic in Archive
Well, tier has much less importance in WoWS than WoT so I don't think it has a raison d'être. Sorting by ship class does let you know instantly what the overall tone of the match will be like. -
How to avoid DD torpedoes at range of 5 km and up: Step1) See a DD on the map coming towards you Step2) As soon as the DD turns to a side then leaves, turn 90 degrees yourself Step3) Congratulations, you are immune to DDs How to avoid DD torpedoes at 5km and below Step1) Shoot it once Step2) There is no more DD Step3) There are no more torpedoes Step4) Stop reading this guide, it was over since step 1 Step5 ) Seriously, one salvo is all it takes

Similar experience against two Omahas in a Mogami.I was using the 155mm guns (best Japanese guns ever by the way) so 15 shells per broadside salvo total. First salvo instantly wreck one. As in 5 citadel hits and all the rest did penetrating damage. Second salvo instantly wrecks the other. Similar numbers as above. All that at about 5km I felt bad for them. I know they are 2 tiers below me, but still...I killed them both in the span of 15 seconds...

Same here, I always get the impression that people hate the Aoba and the Pensacola because they're comparing them to the Cleveland. The Cleveland with the quad fast-rotation turreted, triple-mount 152mm with 7.5 second reload. Of course 4 rpm twin 203s are going to feel less powerful, but that's only because the Cleveland completely skews your view of things.

Aren't battleships kinda underpowered right now?
Exocet6951 replied to Mars_Triumphant's topic in General Discussion
I dont remember there being a 2:1 ratio of battleships to destroyers IRL. More like 1:8 So in a game where there are MORE BBs than DDs, a single (generally lower tier) DD absolutely should have a chance a killing a BB alone. -
What are your biggest issues with the game at the moment?
Exocet6951 replied to Broevaharo's topic in Archive
It's not even the ridiculously high amount of BB, or even their damage that gets to me, the last minipatch diminished damage a bit, so you can't point and click with AP and do 30k per salvo on every target except other BBs any more. The large healthpool is annoying (to say the least), but it does bring some variety to the battle. What gets to me with BBs are their total and undying devotion to sniping from open ocean, far from anything. You want to damage them with a cruiser? Fine, you have to get to 10-14km while spotted and be the priority target. You want to damage them with a DD? You have to get really close or else they'll dodge your torps. And guess what's a close range? Big guns, and lots of automatic smaller guns. You want to damage them with a carrier? You have to go through a gauntlet of AA fire, as BBs have the best AA defense and they stick together in bunches. The only thing that can reliably damage a group of enemy sniping BBs is your own group of BBs, while the others try to scavenge for damage as they get closer. I can deal with being smaller, having much less hp, hitting less hard, having worse AA....but I can't deal with being a plaything/target practice/personnal servant and meatshield for a group of 6-12 people on both teams doing their little match between themselves while others that aren't in their private club have the privilege of supporting them. -

The Aoba does have the redeeming feature of having huge shells. So while she's no hellbeast, not by a long shot, I found use for her in battle by harassing bug slow ships with HE shells an their ridiculously high 14% chance of fire and ease of critical damage. A big bulky BB isn't as fun to play when 2/3rds of it is on fire. Oh, that and it leads to the Mogami, which with its 155mm guns (don't use the 203s) is absolutely glorious.
-
It's not RNG, it sensible shell choice. If you fire an armor piercing shell made to penetrate a battleship's superstructure and explode inside, at an unarmored target, the shell passes through. Fire an HE shell at it, and it shreds it. But if overpenetration isn't really a thing, why are HE shells the prefered munition on soft targets like trucks ? Because as it stands, BBs shooting massive AP shells at unarmored targets like DDs and some parts of CLs and doing full damage is like a tank shooting an AP shell in a truck's cabin and having it explode in a furious ball of flames as if it were filled with gasoline, gunpower and TNT. Plus, it's only good for the game. Less instant kills at long range means less pointless max range sniping.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Roberts_(F40) A Roberts class monitor ! Twin 15 inch guns on a 117m ship that can go a whopping 12 knots ! Pew pew :3
-
How to fix BBs : make overpenetration properly. Simple as that. BBs one shoot because they spam AP at even the smallest of targets. Shell which should go in and out, not exploding, are doing max damage. Fix that, more BBs will use HE, like before. Some will stay far away to pew pew with HE, others will move in to use AP. Not more cruiser cannon-fodder shooting gallery, no more DD waiting around doing nothing because the entire enemy team is 8km from the closest island.

Please, for the love of everything that is unholy, test DDs before speaking.Seriously. Do some actual beta testing by actually testing. Take a little tier5 DD, get match-up against Clevelands messing you up instantly, BBs in open ocean has a pissing contest with their brethren on the other team, while everyone focuses you because you are an easy kill. Now do it with you main weapon technically having more than 5km, but realistically against decent players, less than 3km. Less than most secondary guns, and much less than the distance at which you are spotted.
-
What makes the Pensacola so bad, except that it's the direct successor to a faceroll cruiser? I'm genuinely asking.
-
Not to ruin your parade, but if beta testing for you is focusing 2/3 of your battles on a single class, and then demanding nerfs on the main weapon of the counter-class which you youself have never played, you make for a pretty poor beta tester.

Which would be a great point if this were real life. But logic bomb: this is a game. Completely different.

I'm making jet planes sound worthless at doing what prop planes are doing in game.I'm showing at what point they aren't as flexible as prop planes. That they can't use torpedoes, they can't fly around just out of AA range of enemy ships waiting for the perfect timing, that they jt can't be as accurate as similar era prop planse when it comes down to aiming. So ingame, they would be mainly used to destroy other planes and harass enemy ships with quick bomb runs. Not the massive faceroll "jets win everything and make everything obsolete" argument you seem to be doing. Argument that falls flat on its face when you consider prop planes like the A-1 Skyraider, built to circumvent the disadvantages of early jets. Skyraider which was used, mind you, all the way up to the Vietnam war.
-
Not necessarily.Jets have massive disadvantages compared to prop planes. First, they are simply too fast to use torpedoes. Second, because of their speed, they have less time to aim. That means less bomb accuracy for fighter-bombers, and less cannon accuracy against other planes. Third, they have horrendous turning rates, which makes for slow maneuvering on the map. You would sacrifice a lot of actual hitting power for speed. What you would have is an anti-carrier carrier. The only danger to ships they would pose is a few bombs now and then. Notoriously bad bombs in WoWB.
-
It would be an interesting idea to look into having an alternate tierx CV with jet aircrafts. Of course, that would mean having mostly fighters and dive bombers. Yes I'm aware that carrier-based jets like the F2H Banshee weren't really dive bombers, but their armament mostly ressembles ingame dive bombers. Add some longer cooldown for launching the jets, and you got yourself a rapid-response carrier focusing on air-superiority and quick bombings. I'm all for WG looking into that, see if it's playable and usable ingame.

Ok But then you remove torpedo indicators, remove the wake trail on Japanese oxygen torpedoes, give them longer range, and have 4 DD per capital ship in every battle. You want realistic? Fine, have fun looking at the waves to spot a quasi-inexistant torpedo trail as 4 DDs sent their salvoes in a criss-cross pattern all around you. Because face it, when you say you want realism, you want to pick up a BB and shoot at helpless ships without any real danger, right?

Well I like the Mutsuki's funny little AA escort pedigree. Although it was much better a month ago when it actually had guns, and wasn't just a floating torpedo launcher.

Get a DD Drop your battleship, stop trying to get the biggest possible ship and yawn at the slow paced nature of the game, and get yourself a fast-paced, action packed, multirole destroyer. After having played them in the weekend tests, I'm happy to say I'm still absolutely heart-struck and in love with them, and I wholeheartedly suggest new players to give them a go. Whatever you do, don't play a few slow low tier cruisers then hop in the tier3 Kawachi BB and think that it's all the game has to offer. There is so much more to WoWS, and DDs are the heralds of that discovery you may not have made yet. Seriously, if you're on the fence about this game, don't take my word for it, do the 1-2 games required to get a tier2 DD and see just how different the game can be when you focus less on shooting and more on movement and positionning.

AP shells seem to be doing much, much more damage than in weekend tests. The result is that you tend to take over 10k damage quite often, something that was quite rare in weekend tests. I'm not too fond of that, as destroyers feel even more vulnerable (yes I'm aware they aren't supposed to take hits, but being one-shot by cruisers is a harsh punishment), and IJN torpedo cruisers feel inferior to US counterparts that focus on guns with better RoF. And while during the weekends there was a lot of debate as to when you needed to use AP and where, right now it seems as simple as using it all the times, except if you have massive guns and you are firing at a DD. Any thoughts?
