Friesland: before you spend your FXP

Using hydro mod is actually a great suggestion, it fit's in slot 2 though, not slot 3 where the smoke mod lives. I have currently got AA mod installed in slot 2 which extends the DefAA duration to 48 seconds, but hydro mod sounds very solid too. It's actually not the torps that are worrysome sitting in Frieslands extended smoke, it's ships pushing that smoke because the Friesland lacks alpha strike capability. Hydro can help with that too. Like I said, I use my smoke a lot to help the team out strategically, so the long smoke trail helps cover a lot of ground. Hydro mod is better suited for self use. -

I just tested this and I can't get neither Polish nor Dutch captain to speak their native tongue but all other captains do. So standard language as set in your preferences for now as far as I can tell. Sadface :( -

Solid advice. I started out using my Blyska captain who had IHFE trained, and it wasn't worth the points at all to me. I got into very different engagements to what I expected where IHFE doesn't help one bit so I rebuild for fire damage, ROF and module protection instead. I use the smoke mod in slot 3. AA mod is a great choice as well, but since CV'S already seem to avoid me the longer smoke trail lets me conceal large areas and assist cruisers and other destroyers in shielded barrages at enemy targets for still quite long periods. The shortened duration is fine with me as sitting in smoke for long stretches of time is even more risky business in her due to the lack of Alpha threat. I had a great match with a random very capable Salem who I assisted twice by smoking up at full speed completely hiding her from the rest of the enemy team. She didn't need to sit in smoke but could freely move behind it completely concealed while firing, killing off another high tier cruiser and a full HP Bismark on her own while hardly being damaged herself. I can recommend the engine mod as well. -

Right. We can't all agree on 1 miln fxp being a lot of FXP then. To me 1 mil fxp compared to the 750k I paid for the Missi and compared to the other fxp ships I have is quite expensive for what the ship seems to be at first glance: a high skill small boat with limited earning capabilities and no silver ships to train captains for. Better? As for a lot of the other nay sayers here, especially the ones that don't have her and claim she can't hold up against other DD's, I say I am deleting or crippeling Khaba's, Frenchies, Gearings, IJN destroyers and Fieslands regularly. I'm not saying it's easy, and I'm not saying it can't come at great cost, but it's happening all he time. And yes I see a wide variety in Friesland captains skill wise. Some are right out confused with the ship. Look, this ship is something different. If you see a player doing bad in it he or she might be just bad, or still learning what to do and what not. I went from middle position to top position in my matches after a thorough build change, and I'm winning matches now sometimes because I'm damaging plenty of crucial targets, sometimes by supporting crucial teammates and every now and then because I suck and get carried (by another random Friesland killing 4 enemy ships for instance, true story). To those that are wondering if this ship is worth 1 mil fxp for them, so far my experiences after 10 battles are this: I use it in randoms only, tested it in coop too. For both modes it's a good ship. It can be pretty hectic at times compared to other DD'S. If you enjoy a-typical ships, this is one for you. If you are looking for the next OP pwning machine don't bother. You will keep wanting to select key 3 to use torpedoes. You don't need to spec for AA, BFT will do. CV'S will usually leave you alone most of the time. It's vulnerable, damage sticks to it like glue, there is no recovering it. Be careful with her. She's nothing like the RU destroyers. She's nothing like the IJN gunboats. She's nothing like the US destroyers. Due to the lack of fishes it has no area denial tools, which applies to you sitting in smoke as well. Her smoke is not only a torpedo magnet, but it attracts DD's, cruisers and even Battleships. She does very well in support with other ships, alone she can struggle. Her AA is almost as usable to help teammates fight off carrier attacks as the Atlanta was pre 0.8.0. Her 360 turrets are great. Use PM and the maintenance mod because you only have 2. You probably need a 14 pnt captain to make her work decent, but preferably a full 19 point one. Much like the Assashio I hold dear, she is a cunning trap machine, not a brute force one. I have no clue if she is competitive but instinct says no. I haven't kept track on her money making yet as I'm loaded with silver, sorry. If you have any question, I'm sure some of us Friesland captains will be happy to help answering. Good or bad. -
I just reset my first tech tree, and plan to reset them all.
Mad_Dog_Dante replied to Mad_Dog_Dante's topic in General Discussion
Soooo, a little update, and I am wondering how the rest of you who have reset lines are faring. Especially @Dragnorak here lol. Hopw's things? Did you regret resetting? I had a smol break with the Friesland, which I just bought. I'm currently at the Mogami, which is my all time favorite IJN cruiser rediscovered currently. Fitted with 155 mm she's wrecking havoc and has kills up the butt. The reset dragged me away from the sadness of tier X, the stale matches, the inertia of half the players in those matches, the damage grinding, all of that. I feel free! (<- whoever takes that serious needs to consider getting a lobotomy) Just to brag a little on my Mogami spree, the result of my latest match, a loss, but 5 kills in a tier IX match where 2 BB's went middle on 2 brothers 'for funsies' and got slaughtered. Yay. fun. So, how y'all doing with the reset? I've seen some Colberts out there already. -

Look, I know some of us form their opinion on a ship based on what they see others do in it or ship attributes alone. That's fine. Also, some of us might have very different goals or expectations for certain ships, especially when they come at a hefty pricetag, because that is one thing we probably all agree on: it's bloody expensive. One thing i'd like to stress though: no matter how well you observe others or read ship attributes, there is no comparison to sailing a ship yourself, getting to know her a bit, and forming an experienced opinion on how she plays. I respect everyone here bringing up points about why she sucks, should suck or has to suck, but unless you suck in it yourself, I'm not too fussed about your armchair opinion. With that said, I played 10 matches in her and below are my initial results compared to my other tier 9 DD's. As you can see I am no magical wonderboy in tier 9 DD's, and the sample size is small. But nevertheless. Make of it what you will. 1st in Planes destroyed (mostly tier X planes if I recall correctly). 2nd in WR. 3rd in avg damage. 4th in avg frags. Last in PR. This result is in a ship I just started playing and has little to no presedence. These stats will normalise as I progress, but so far, not complaining. She is hard work though. Also, carriers useally leave me be either at all or after their initial first attack. Oh and... Asashio -
Very happy WG added this flag option to my countries ship. TY.

Well, despite all the sensible cons and pros mentioned here, I like this ship, but she is expensive. She is very different from all other DD's, and she's a challenge some may not like. I never assume I can judge a ship within the first few battles, so refunding it purely based on stats and 1 battle makes me wonder why one bought it in the first place. Just to confirm a bias? Don't get me wrong, I'm not a massive pro in it, and I don't play clan competetive and hardly any ranked so I don't care about those, but I'm getting to know her and I like she's odd. Above all: it's fun! But who cares right. Also I'm known to love one trick ponies. -
After 2 battles with the new build I can already say I'm happy with the new setup. It's way more responsive and fun to play. The result of the two matches below. I went from mediocre mid scoring position to top scoring position, and I'm actually not sure why, because the matches didn't feel particularly better, but my damage on BB's went up dramatically due to fires. In the first match I actually duke it out at 6 km range with a Lyon in plain sight being pushed out of my smoke (yes she has no area denial power what so ever, make sure you realise that at all times), a fight I seriously dominated trading shells. In the second match I got to farm a Soyuz TXI BB while low on health, which resulted in a whopping 70k damage on her. Overall I don't feel intimidated by other DD's, but it always comes at a cost of HP. Second match had a CV in it but it hardly came near me after I raped her initial Midway rocket squad by pretending to have an AA build at the cost of 0 damage due to some slik rocketbeats manouvering Short version: I think this is the build i'll run with, pretty happy with it, and with the ship. She is very different from all other DD's. And I'm still trying to torp

Great feedback so far, thanks. I played a few battles in random now, and I will change my build. I find myself in DD vs. DD fights a lot, and I don't survive long enough to make use of SI at all. I also don't find IHFE useful enough to warrant 4 points spend on that, so I'll drop the Blyska build and try a Friesland centric build instead. This is what I will test with. PT and PM to help keep everything working LS and AR as I am usually damaged pretty early ingame, so extra damage output is applied most of the time for long durations SE, DE and BFT CE I find Hydro mod 1 essential, but I am not impressed by a 107 -> 101 dispersion buff, and do not like to spec for AA, so I'll keep my smoke mod 1 to help teammates, but just because of lack of more interesting choices. Thank you all for your suggestions so far.

I fired up the game tonight, and found myself in this mess in my first match. Four things happened here: Double Smolensk, Friesland and a team that doesn't yet know how to handle the endless smoked up HE barrages which gives players targetted by these barrages not a single second of rest to think what to do about their predicament. Wasn't the initial UK cruiser line considered too disruptive carrying smoke and rapid firing HE? Or was it WG just looking for a tech tree gimmick at the time? What do you think of the release of these HE/Smoke carrying ships? Disclaimer: I am not against the release of these ships, nor am I overly excited by them. I am just not sure what to think, yet. I've deleted Smols with my GK with ease before, and this match was my first encounter as a tier 8 cruiser. Looking at the score I'd say it was mostly a matter of a team that didn't know how to handle itself facing new features. I have the Smol but didn't play it much yet, and will be getting the Friesland pretty soon since I'm Dutch.
-
Tnx! I've tested her in coop a bit, and in a armor training set up with all tier 10 cruisers and some tier 9's as I'm not yet certain how she's behaving. I did like what I saw there damage wise, on some cruisers you get to put some extra hurt on bow, decks and stern and light cruisers are becoming soft all over which seems great. I'm considering your BFT suggestion and Preventive Maint. instead of IHFE, which seems to be a great alternative build for her, especially given that she has only two turrets. Current reload time is 1.6 s. BFT would cut that to 1.4 s right? I'm pretty sure she's quite vulnerable, so PM might be a great help, and an extra smoke seems pretty important. I like that about this ship, she seems to have a few valid builds in her. I've traded the Smoke Mod 1 for Aiming syst. Mod 1 to help her dispersion but it doesnt seem to make much difference as she's got a pretty short range. I'll probably switch back to the Smoke Mod to be able to smoke a huge area to help teammates.

Rediscovering the Mogami as the 155 mm beast it is when top tier. 6 kills and got robbed of the Scharnhorst (31k plus damage on her) which would have made it 7. -
I would like a Scharnhorts rental for free and a 50% coupon. Solidified my decision to not spend any more on this marketing machine. Unless I get my 50% coupons. Lots of them
-
Actually, it's by design. The research buro leads to an influx of high skill players at low tiers, and since CV tiers are only at even tiers, someone like me who does not FXP through it actually has to play a significant amount of battles per tier. I do however completely agree with your main point: double CV matches are pretty bad, and counter productive at tiers 3 and 4.
-
Well, I pushed the second one to be honest, while my team, fled ^^. And the first one didn't move up but got surprised by a ballsy worchester on our team that had been using islands to move up. Quite classy because the Smol was close to 2 battleships and a Henry. In both cases they were pushed by our team, which they didn't seem to anticipate. I'd say they overestimated their scariness a bit ^^
-
They were too much relying on their smoke, and when it ran out they apparantly had no proper escape plan. One got radared while crossing between islands popping his smoke to avoid detection, the other one just spotted when he fled his dissapating smoke. Not sure what his DD buddy was doiing at the time because he was pretty close. Guess comms didn't go as planned

Hmm.. I've met opponent div's 3with Smols times now and blapped 2 Smols in those encounters. I have a Smol too, but didn't play it much yet.
