I'm having similar issues too; texture quality keeps defaulting to low every time I exit settings, no matter whether I go by 'apply' or 'cancel.' I've tried to change it manually from preferences.xml but still no luck. My graphics card is an nVidia GeForce GTX 670 and my drivers are up-to-date.
