    Albany Cruiser - UP?

Hmm, I find that this little ship is a beast in low tier battles. Yes, is has short gunrange, but the ship itself is a very low profile target and hard to hit reliably at long range. So in order to hit you, the enemy needs to close in...right into your gun range. Just don't get in close with a St. Louis...that'll hurt like hell. Otherwise I find this a very fun little ship, which I'm sure to buy when the game goes live.
  2. AA is an automated system. I personally have seen them fire, might have something to do with your graphical settings? (I believe most of the AA animations are visible at High settings and above) Nevertheless, as I understood it every ship has a certain AA strength at certain ranges and angles (depending on the ranges of guns and gun placement). Wether or not you see just one puff of smoke or a sky blackened by them, the AA will do its work at said "strength" automatically. There is no other way to force it.

    Blatant Teamkiller "wolfmanforfreedom"

Guys, please no naming&shaming on the forums, as it's against the forum rules. Use the Customer Service Center link on the top of the page to report the player in question. Be sure to add clear screenshots or vids as evidence. The reporting system will be implemented before the game goes live (or so I've heard), as I understood is that it still under development for the "new" chat system that this game uses.

German ships in the near future?

Actually, it would make a lot of sense for the German tree to have some Dutch prem ships, as they captured quite a few when they invaded the Netherlands. The old HNLMS Gelderland was rebuilt to a mobile AA ship (or "Schwimmende Flakbatterie") and renamed her to Niobe (see HERE for details), I recall a Russian dev "confirming" (MIND THE QUOTES) her as a likely German premium. The Germans also captured and completed the destroyer HNLMS Gerard Callenburgh (which was still under construction back then), which they renamed to ZH1. And when it comes to cruisers, the Germans had the full intention of completing the two Eendracht-class cruisers then still under construction, which will make a nice addition as a tier 7-ish prem. So, lots of potential good stuff for a German tree for us Dutchies, When it comes to Project 1047, the design was considered to be superior to the Scharnhorst-class in pretty much every way except for armor protection. More reliable machinery, a way stronger AA battery (something we Dutchies were actually GOOD at) using DP guns and 40mm bofors and other improvements. Too bad the war broke out before they were laid down, guns/turrets were already being manufactured and were later used in the Atlantik Wall if I remember correctly.

WoWS mods. Should they be allowed?

I have no problems with graphical changes to the interface or ship skins, heck, I use custom ship and flag mods myself! What I do have problems with is mods of a technical kind (like camera mods) that give players an unfair advantage over others. Those should be disallowed and, if possible, it shout be made technically impossible to use such mods.

    WoWs and OS X

As far as I know WoWs isn't planned (yet?) for OSX. Only way to play it is though Windows Bootcamp or some other form of virtual machine. Should, in theory, work just fine, as modern Apple computers are more or less normal Intel PC's in a fancy box.
  9. So, thou is about to set forth on a noble quest to slay a mighty battleship? Then taketh this semi-fine guide with you for your amusement and braincell destruction! Ye important steps to slaying a mighty foe whilst thou art in a cruiser: Step zero: prayeth to whichever god thou believes in for a healthy dose of luck, so thine cruiser sized steed remains safe from the godless wrath brought upon it by the great, evil beasts. Step the first: thou shallt load the rounds of great explodonating (HE). Do not forget to read aloud the prayer of explosive ordnance from the Book of Armaments. Step the second: Thou shallt spam thou thickly armored foe with earlier mentioned shells of great explodonating whilst moving towards thine foe at a great velocity. Do not forget to politely curse thine foe in the chat, recite the litanies of hatred (as found in ye holy book of the Lexagon (WGNA product specialist) - chapter 14: the accursed unholy alliance of the Gouda cheese and Maple Syrup, verse 12) and make random turns as described in "Evasive actions for dummies - 2014 edition". Step the third: Once distance has been closed to something that can only be described as "HOLY CRAP THOSE GUNS ARE BIG!!!", commence loading of the devices of great penetration (AP), utter the prayer of armor piercing (Book of armaments, chapter 22, verse 1) and commence penetrating action of the foes armored citadel. Maketh sure thou placeth thine shots at locations beneath the turrets (magazines) and in the hull beneath the superstructure. If thine shells fail to pierce the godless beasts skin OR appear to be blessed with too much penetrating power by the almighty gods of destruction (over penetration), fear not to ask assistance from ye olde shells of high explodonating. They be a helpful bunch. Step the fourth: Continue ye olde spamming of shells until thou foe snuffs it and goes up in a glorious hate-filled explosion. Step the fifth: Commence celebratory banter in chat and teamspeak and begin hunting a new foe and return to steppeth zero. I can imagine people will question the sanity of these steps, yet I can safely say that during last RU test sessions multiple BBs were slain in a 1-on-1 with me being in a cruiser. It's not 100% foolproof but it works for me!
  10. ...why would you sell ALL your ships in order to get a single tier X?? I honestly cannot see the logic in that... That's like selling EVERYTHING you own to buy a Ferrari, just to find out that you now lack the money to buy the fuel. Sense, it makes none. Anyway, this is actually working as intended. Tier Xs and especially capital ships are meant to be expensive as f*ck to run, otherwise there will be plenty of people who'll never get out of said capital ships. So, my advice: buy a DD or a cruiser, start making money, have fun, and occasionally get Yammy out. And then again, Yammy isn't that special a BB anyway. Slow, terrible turret traverse, BB-style RNG with shots going everywhere.... Cruiser love is good love people!
  11. Ye olde guide as hast been written above is in dire need of some olde TLC and should thus be taken with ye olde grain of salt. Be sureth that scribes are working hard on a revised version.

    Main battery upgrades

Totally depends on the ship and the upgrade. Some upgrades give extra range, which is always nice, but like in the case of the Mogami one could argue that the upgrade (to 10x203mm) isn't worth it as the stock turrets (15x155mm) can ruin anything that isn't a BB. So, yes, they can be worth it, but it depends on the ship and the upgrade in question.

    Cruisers with dual-purpose batteries ?

USN starting with Cleveland and onwards. IJN I think it starts with Aoba, not 100% sure though.
  19. Actually, I think all armored and protected cruisers work pretty well at the moment. (now that the Beta NDA has been lifted) St. Louis has its durability, but lacks range and speed Aurora (pronounced: Aurarararararaaarararaa) is less durable and has even less speed, but has very punchy 6" guns (the same broadside St. Louis has) and has a 1.5km range advantage over St. Louis and, if memory serves, a slight RoF advantage. Chester might lack armor and firepower, but has speed to make up for it Albany lacks speed AND range, but has a very low profile, making her quite hard to hit at range, thus forcing you to get close...and in range of Albany's guns. So, imho, de protected and armored cruisers actually do quite well in WoWs at the moment. The IJN light cruisers might be more nible and mobile, but they lack the durability the USN and Russian cruisers have. When it comes to Pisa, she might have her place in the game, but that will depend on how the game will handle her secondaries as her primary guns might be big, she doesn't have a lot of them (for instance, they could count the 7.5" secondaries as primary weapons). When it comes to her speed she actually outruns most of the low-tier cruisers ingame, in that regard she might actually be OP for the low tiers.

    Cruiser gamplay need some Tips

Cruisers are awesome, and I use them all the time because of it. However, at this very moment cruisers are suffering from a f-ing invasion of BB players which disturbs the balance of the game to a large degree. However, while a cruiser seems like a shiptype that is easy to get in to, it is actually very hard to master. Situational awareness is, like with DDs, key with cruisers, especially with those of the IJN and the early USN CLs. Against BBs...if you're armed with 6" gun you're pretty much F-ed. I don't know what has been changed in the armor mechanics but 6" shells tend to do very little damage against BBs at this point, even when you have 15 of the things like on Mogami. 8" tends to do better, with well placed AP shots doing between 1000 and 9000 damage per salvo. What I tend to do is keep at range, where you can use your mobility to your advantage in combination with a BBs poor RNG. Keep doing evasive manoeuvres, keep spamming those 8" shells and try to lure the sucker into your torpedo volleys. On the low tiers you'll find plenty of inexperienced BB captains who tend to ignore smaller targets. If you are in a fast ship like Phoenix, and with a bit of luck and a healty dose of situational awareness, you can sneak up on a BB and do some suprise buttsex with your torps and 6" guns. Your reload will generally be fast enough to put a number of salvos into the BB before he can respond and give you enough time to GTFO. Aoba is another matter entirely though, Aoba = HARD MODE in this game. You have puncy guns, but not a lot of them, your torps lack range and armor...well, you don't have any. When using Aoba be VERY CAREFUL which targets you engage. It also doesn't help that it's tiered up against a very OP cruiser (Cleveland) so pretty much the only thing that will make you effective in that ship is skill. And, yes, I know it can be frustrating as hell to grind through that ship...the payoff (Mogami) is totally worth it though. However, as said before, the biggest problem right now for CL/CA captains is the overwhelming presence of BBs, especially in the higher tiers. It's not unusual at tier VIII to get in a game with 9 BBs, 2 CAs and 1 DD on each side. So I hope they'll put a unit cap on the number of BBs, but that's just my hope as a CA player.

    Albany premium ship

Albany is a nice and fun little ship. Yes the range may be a bit short, but she's also pretty low-profile, making you hard to hit at longer ranges. If I had some piasters left, I'd buy immediately.
  23. Ah, a new recruit! Welcome, welcome! Please, sit down, have some brandy and make yourself comfortable. So, you wish to become one of the big boys, eh? Be one of this small cadre of manly men who take a punch in the face and then politely ask “was that all?” Good for you dear boy! Well then, let this old fart give you a few pointers…wait…I’m missing something.. JAMES! MORE BRANDY!! Blasted personell these days, must I do everything myself?!?! *glass of brandy gets refilled* *sips* Aaaaah, yes, that hits the spot. Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes, getting punched in the face. Right, as you are well aware there are no manlier men than battleship captains. Yes, I’m quite sure there are also female battleship captains, but they have grown manly mustaches and beards due to all the manliness that radiates from our ships and are therefore to be considered honorary men. No, this is not up for discussion, this is a fact. Battleships do not discriminate when it comes to manliness. Please do remember this key word: MANLY! If you repeat it often enough, you might start growing a beard. (This clean-shaven babyface you have now just will not do…) Anyway, BATTLESHIPS! Aaaaah, yes, there’s power in that word! BATTLE!!!!!ship. No other class of ships can match that. “Destroyer” comes close, but is like lemonade to brandy. What? Aircraft carriers? AIRCRAFT CARRIERS? My dear boy, let me make one thing overly clear before you utter those foul words again: PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SHOT FOR LESS. So be a good chap and NEVER EVER EVER mention those foul contraptions again. Otherwise I’d be forced to ask James to shoot you. He’s actually quite skilled with that Mauser you know? In order to understand the manliness of a battleship, one has to understand it’s role on the battlefield. To be a battleship captain is like wearing clothing with “shoot me” notes all over. Sounds bad, right? Well, unfortunately for those shooting at us, we’re so manly we make Chuck Norris cry such manly tears of joy that they create craters when they hit the ground. So, what steps should you take in order to raise your manliness? Well, follow these tips and maybe, just maybe, you’ll get some hair on your chest. Big, BIG guns Of all the ships, our guns are the manliest…or biggest, whatever word you prefer. On the same tier, we outrange everyone (except those pesky carriers… *spits*), do more damage per shell when we hit than everybody else (except other BB captains) and…JUST LOOK AT THOSE BIG GUNS! From 12” to 18.1”, they are things of beauty. But even though they are manly in the extreme, this manlyness comes at a cost. It takes a while for your manly gun crews to load them with shells of manly destruction, usually taking up to 30-ish seconds for a reload. So place your shots wisely! Unlike the other classes firing a ranging shot is a must! Fire a ranging shot, see where it lands, adjust your aim accordingly and shower your target in destructive shell-shaped manliness! Do keep in mind that these big shells have a larger spread than those tiny peas the other ships “fire” (or so they claim), RNG can be a whiny b*tch sometimes and prevent us from giving those who oppose us what they deserve. Manly turrets are slow turrets Big, manly guns need equally manly turrets to house them in. Disadvantage of being the biggest (and best, did I mention that already?) is that they are HEAVY. Simple physics state that things which are heavy, must be slow. Unfortunately, physics is one of the manliest things in this universe making it resists all attempts to speed this up, so we must use our manly wits to work around this. Firing at a moving target at medium to long range will not be a problem, but trying to track a fast target at close range can be problematic. A sollution to this can be to turn your ship in the same direction your turrets are moving in in order to speed this up. Do keep in mind that this might move you into a tactically unpleasant situation. One thing one must always try to avoid is to make your turrets move from one broadside to the other. With the exception of some ships with wing turrets (like Kawachi), this will take a looooooooooong time, limiting the amount of barrels you can fire towards a target. Now this might sound girlish, but it is a wisdom that cannot be denied: CHOSE YOUR TARGETS WISELY! Speaking of targets… Some lesser men, who somehow got their hands on a battleship, tend to shoot at whatever they can see. Let me tell you now that firing at a destroyer from long range is perhaps the most useless thing you can do. Your shells take time to travel towards their target and they get hit by the RNG spread-O-matic harder than getting kicked in the face by a ten stories all horse. A BIG SHELL NEEDS A BIG TARGET! So, ignore small and fast targets unless you desperately need to hit it, like in the case of a capping destroyer and your team being too unmanly to do something about it. “But what about short ranges?” I hear you ask? On short range, everything is fair game. Just make sure you lead your targets sufficiently so those girly girls get what they deserve (before they outturn your turrets, as described above). Got range? Unlike other ships were are blessed AND cursed by the long range of our guns. Yes, we outrange everything with guns on the same tier. But unlike other ships, we actually have a minimum range! Our massive and manly guns are so big that they cannot be pointed down enough (aka gun depression) to fire at smaller targets on point blank range. NEVER, let me repeat that, NEVER let a ship of destroyer or cruiser size get within that minimum range. Yes, you have secondary guns for that but those pesky little ships will be able to hurt you more than you can hurt them at those ranges. And having a DD launching torpedoes at point blank range is something that…may be bad for the paintjob, if you catch my meaning. No pain, no gain! Talking about pain, we can take a lot of it! We are blessed with thick skins of Krupp cemented steel (or whatever is your fancy: Vickers Face-Hardened, STS etc…) This results in us bouncing shots from lesser ships which could wreck smaller ships and the size of our manly battlewagons gives us a healthy amount of hitpoints. The only things that can seriously hurt us in one go are torpedoes, bombs from divebombers and…you guessed it! Large caliber shells from other manly men in battleships! But that is just the instant-damage, the threat from smaller ships is usually the damage over time. Due to their higher rate of fire cruisers and destroyers (if they ignore their torpedoes for a second) usually start to pummel us with high-explosive shells. These don’t do a massive amount of damage per shell, but have nasty side-effects: they knock out equipment like AA and secondary guns and even our engines…and they are the cause of the mortal enemy of all ships – fires! Luckily we have our expert repair crews handy to fix that, but these small buggers have the tendency to cause new fires as fast as you can put them down, especially when they are at close range to you. So make sure to rid yourselves from these pests as soon as you are effectively capable of doing so. I need a flyswatter! While our proud battlewagons are awesomely manly and awesomely awesome in so many ways, there is one thing in which smaller ships are, well (and I hate to say this), better. And that is maneuverability and AA. Sure, especially the USN battleships have plenty of AA, but the best defence is not getting hit at all. Torpedoes launched towards us by a destroyer don’t have to be a problem, but those pesky torpedobombers and diverbombers are the bane of the manly battleship captain. As these girly carrier captains don’t dare to take us on in a proper and civilized gunfight, they pester us with their swarms of bombers, which can be hard for us to avoid. In order to limit this threat the best thing you can do is stick together with other manly men, or those little lads in smaller ships but which can provide you with AA cover. Once you do spot a carrier in range of your mighty guns, please do remind him of your presence by showering the girly girl with high explosive shells of manliness. Putting them out of their misery is the least we can do. Thou shallt not cross my T! Having your T crossed is girly speak for your foe crossing your bow so you can only use your foreward guns. This. Will. Not. Do! You should always try to prevent this situation from happening, turn with your foe so you keep all your guns pointed towards him or, in the worst case scenario, turn away from him so that -eventually- your turrets will be able to turn towards this bugger that keeps scratching your paint (and create some distance from him in the process). Your minimap is your friend, always keep an eye on your foe’s position and heading in relation to your own. One last thing… It is very easy to get overwhelmed by the manliness of our ships but there is one thing I cannot stress enough – a lone battleship is a dead battleship. There is no shame in admitting that going full-rambo against the whole enemy fleet is a foolish enterprise. Fun, yes, but foolish. Glorious success comes through sticking together and destroying ones enemies with overwhelming firepower…and the massed AA fire of a group of ships comes in handy as well. So, in short: get a feel of your ships (there is no shame in having to practice a few games), use rangeing shots to your advantage, pick your targets wisely, be aware of aircraft and stick together. Do this and success will follow! And success needs celebration, so… JAMES! MORE BRANDY!!!
